From Letter Sounds to Chapter Books: Supporting Your K-5 Reader at Home

The Challenge

Whether your child is just starting to realize that letters make sounds or they are struggling to keep up with the heavy reading load of 5th grade, the journey to becoming a fluent reader isn’t always a straight line.

For many families, “reading time” at home has turned into a source of stress. You want to help, but the methods used in classrooms today often feel different from how we were taught. You might be seeing:

  • Kindergarteners are frustrated that they can’t remember their “heart words.”
  • 2nd Graders are hitting a wall as they transition from picture books to early chapter books.
  • 4th- and 5th-graders who can read the words but have no idea what they just read.

Bridging the Gap

As a Literacy Specialist, I know that the “Science of Reading” isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a roadmap. Every child learns differently, but the foundation remains the same: phonics, fluency, and comprehension.

My goal is to take the guesswork out of home practice by creating resources that bridge the gap between the classroom and your kitchen table. Below are a few samples of the tools I offer to support families. I am constantly adding new materials, so while this isn’t an exhaustive list, it’s a great place to start!”
