Engaging Families in Literacy: Tools for All Skill Levels

Whether you’re in the classroom or gathered around the kitchen table, there’s nothing quite like the moment a child finally gets it. That spark—when reading begins to click—is what every parent and educator hopes for.

At MG Reading Products and Resources, I understand that bridging the gap between school instruction and home practice isn’t always simple. Each child grows and learns at their own pace, and meeting a reader at the right developmental level can feel overwhelming. Learning differences, varying maturity levels, and evolving reading skills can make the journey feel like a maze—but with the right tools and guidance, there is a clear path forward.

I’m always seeking high-quality resources to support the readers I tutor. While creating digital products that help strengthen their skills. I also value partnering with established curricula that provide a wide range of tools for those working in literacy development.

That’s why I’m excited to share Steps to Literacy. From a “boots-on-the-ground” perspective, their approach truly stands out.

Supporting the Whole Child (Not Just Phonics)

It’s not just about phonics. What really impressed me is their commitment to the whole child, including Social-Emotional Learning. The SEL Junior Bags offer families meaningful ways to navigate big feelings together while strengthening essential life skills.

Real Tools for Diverse Families. One of the biggest hurdles in family engagement is the language barrier. Their Spanish Literacy bags enable parents to authentically support bilingual readers by giving parents the confidence to be their child’s first and most important reading coach.

Making Learning Fun with STEAM and Math

They also bring learning to life through STEAM and math. With resources like the Family Engagement STEAM Kit, science and math feel less like a chore and more like a fun, interactive experience—something families can enjoy together.

A Resource Worth Exploring

If you’re supporting a rising or struggling reader and looking for resources that go beyond basic phonics, Steps to Literacy is definitely worth exploring. From my experience working directly with students, I’ve seen how the right tools can turn frustration into confidence and make learning fun and achievable.
